Net Zero Homes

Plain-language videos, articles and notes on net zero, Passive House and high-performance homes in British Columbia.

What Is a Net Zero Home?

A net zero home produces as much energy as it uses over a year, usually with rooftop solar. It gets there by first cutting its energy needs with a well-insulated, airtight building envelope, then using efficient all-electric equipment like heat pumps, and only then adding renewable energy.

Passive House takes a similar envelope-first approach with very strict comfort and energy targets. In BC, the Energy Step Code and Zero Carbon Step Code are moving every new home in this direction.

Xerox Builders shares what we learn here, for homeowners, investors and anyone curious about building better homes.
